Erectile Dysfunction Treatment

Erectile dysfunction (ED), also known as impotence, is the inability to get and maintain a rigid erection, and may also be accompanied by reduced sexual desire. While it is more common in men over 75, ED affects men of all ages—in fact, half of men 40 and over suffer from this condition.

Occasional erection problems occur for many men, and are no reason for concern. Ongoing issues, however, often lead to relationship difficulties, stress, anxiety and low self-esteem—but it is nothing to be ashamed about or resigned to.

Causes of Erectile Dysfunction

Male sexual arousal is a complex process that involves several body systems, hormones, the mind, and even emotions, and can be impeded by any number of things. With increasing age, it might take longer to develop firm erections or require more direct stimulation of the penis.

Stress and mental health concerns can cause or aggravate erectile issues. A long-term lack of sexual function should be evaluated by your physician, since this can be the symptom of an underlying psychological or medical condition. Once these issues are treated, sexual function often returns naturally.

The many physiological and psychological causes of ED may include:

  • Diabetes
  • Hypertension
  • Heart disease
  • Obesity
  • Atherosclerosis
  • High cholesterol
  • Smoking, alcoholism and substance abuse
  • Certain medications
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Metabolic syndrome
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Peyronie’s disease
  • Past prostatectomy
  • Sleep disorders
  • Depression or anxiety
  • High stress levels
  • Relationship issues

Treatment of Erectile Dysfunction

Dr. Laub offers numerous options to treat ED, help you regain your function and enjoy a satisfying sex life, such as:

  • Testosterone supplementation – We will test your hormone levels to determine whether low testosterone may be the cause of your issues. If so, Dr. Laub can prescribe a supplement to boost testosterone production in your body.
  • Penile prostheses – In some cases, a more permanent solution may be called for. During your evaluation visit, ask Dr. Laub for information about penile implants and prostheses.
  • Peyronie’s Disease (bent penis) – Scar tissue hardened inside the penis can result in bending upward or to the side, and sometimes affects sexual function. Dr. Laub has been using Xiaflex for the treatment of curvature of the penis, also known as peyronies disease, for the past seven years.
